The\u00a0faster-than-expected growth of\u00a0US durable goods orders increased traders\u2019 confidence in\u00a0the\u00a0economy and\u00a0the\u00a0currency of\u00a0the\u00a0United States. At\u00a0the\u00a0same time, economists are worried that the\u00a0report later this week may show an\u00a0increase of\u00a0the\u00a0eurozone unemployment rate to\u00a0the\u00a0record 11.9%. Such worries weakened the\u00a0euro.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Durable goods orders<\/strong> grew as\u00a0much as\u00a04.6% in\u00a0December, beating the\u00a0analysts\u2019 forecast of\u00a01.8%. The\u00a0November growth was 0.8%. (Event A\u00a0on\u00a0the\u00a0chart.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pending home sales<\/strong> dropped 4.3% in\u00a0December from November, when they went up 1.6%. Experts have promised an\u00a0increase by\u00a00.5%. Still, the\u00a0sales remained in\u00a0an\u00a0uptrend on\u00a0an\u00a0annual basis. (Event B on\u00a0the\u00a0chart.)<\/p>\n<p>On\u00a0Friday, a\u00a0report on\u00a0<strong>new home sales<\/strong> was released, showing that the\u00a0sales were at\u00a0the\u00a0seasonally adjusted annual rate of\u00a0369k, below the\u00a0forecast value of\u00a0387k and\u00a0the\u00a0November rate of\u00a0398k (revised from 377k).
